NEW YORK, NY – January 15, 2024 – In a targeted operation against illegal drug activity within schools, the New York Police Department (NYPD), under the leadership of Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban, has dismantled a student-run drug trafficking network operating in several local high schools. The operation, which was a collaborative effort between law enforcement, school authorities, and health department officials, resulted in the arrest of 12 high school students. The individuals are accused of being involved in the distribution of illicit substances, including psychotropic drugs and prescription medications used illegally. Authorities seized approximately 200 units of contraband during the raids, with an estimated street value exceeding $10,000. The primary goal of the operation was to ensure the safety and well-being of students. Following the arrests, the involved students are facing charges under the juvenile justice system related to drug trafficking and distribution on school property. In addition to the legal proceedings, the school district has initiated steps to provide psychological support and addiction treatment resources to the affected students. A broader educational campaign about the dangers of substance abuse is also being rolled out for the entire student body. This action is part of a ongoing national strategy in the United States to combat the illegal drug trade and its impact on youth, emphasizing close cooperation between law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, and the community.
