CITY CENTER – A significant fire broke out in a commercial building in the downtown area earlier this evening, sending large plumes of smoke into the sky that were visible across the city.
The fire started at approximately 7:30 PM in a four-story building on Central Avenue, which is known to house several restaurants and office spaces. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under investigation.
Emergency services responded immediately. Multiple fire trucks and crews were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings.
“Our first priority was to ensure no one was inside the affected building and to protect the surrounding structures,” said Fire Chief David Miller. “The response was swift and coordinated.”
Authorities quickly cordoned off a several-block radius around Central Avenue. Residents and bystanders were urged to avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles clear access. While there have been reports of minor injuries to two firefighters, no civilian casualties have been reported.
The main challenges for firefighters included the dense urban environment and the contents of the buildings, which provided ample fuel for the fire. It took crews several hours to fully extinguish the main blaze, though some teams remain on site to tackle hot spots.
The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but early reports suggest the affected building has suffered severe structural damage. Neighboring buildings have also experienced smoke and water damage.
An investigation into the exact cause of the fire will begin once the scene is declared completely safe.
